The 5-Minute “Power Check”: Why Diabetic Foot Care is Your Superpower

If you have diabetes, you probably know that your feet require a little extra attention. But do you know why?
Diabetes can affect the feet in two main ways: by reducing blood flow and by causing nerve damage (neuropathy). This means you might not feel a small pebble in your shoe or a blister forming on your toe. Left unchecked, these tiny issues can quickly turn into serious infections.
The good news? You have a "superpower" to prevent this: The 5-Minute Daily Power Check.
👣 Your Daily 3-Step Power Check 👣
re is how to do it:
1. The Visual Sweep Look at the top, bottom, and sides of your feet. Are there any red spots, swelling, blisters, or cuts?
Pro Tip: If you struggle to see the soles of your feet, place a mirror on the floor or ask a family member to help.
2. The Texture & Temp Check Run your hand over your feet. Does one area feel much warmer than the rest? Is the skin excessively dry or cracking? Changes in temperature or texture are often the first signs that something is happening under the surface.
3. Between the Toes This is a prime spot for fungal infections and moisture buildup. Ensure the skin between your toes is clean and dry.

When to Call a Podiatrist Immediately
The Power Check is about catching things early. You should book an appointment straight away if you notice:
An open sore or a cut that isn't healing.
New tingling, numbness, or a "burning" sensation.
A change in the color of your foot (red, blue, or unusually pale).
Thickened or yellowing toenails.

Regular foot assessment.
While your daily check is essential, it doesn't replace a professional diabetic foot assessment.
Once a year (at least), you should visit a podiatrist. We use specialised tools to check your circulation and testing instruments to measure your nerve sensitivity. Think of it as a "Full Service" for your feet to ensure everything is running exactly as it should be.
Don't wait for pain to be the trigger—because with diabetes, you might not feel the pain until it’s too late.
