Summer is the perfect time to relax by the pool, enjoy sunny days at the beach, or squeeze in a workout at the gym. But while most people remember to pack their sun cream and flip-flops, many forget that summer activities can take a toll on their feet. As a podiatrist, I regularly see a rise in seasonal foot issues this time of year—many of which are preventable with a few simple precautions.
Here’s how to keep your feet safe, healthy and pain-free all summer long.
1. Protect Against Fungal Infections
Warm, damp environments—like communal showers, gym locker rooms, and poolside areas—are breeding grounds for fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.
Tips:
Always wear flip-flops or shower shoes in public areas.
Dry your feet thoroughly after swimming or showering, especially between the toes.
Change out of damp socks or shoes as soon as possible.
Use antifungal powder or spray if you’re prone to infections.
2. Avoid Cuts, Scrapes & Punctures
Walking barefoot on the beach or around the pool may feel freeing, but it also increases the risk of cuts, scrapes, or even stepping on sharp objects like shells, glass, or debris.
Tips:
Stick to wearing water shoes or sandals, even on the beach.
Avoid rocky areas or unfamiliar water where sharp objects might be hidden.
Clean and cover any minor cuts immediately to prevent infection.
3. Don't Forget Sun Protection for Your Feet
Feet are one of the most commonly neglected areas when it comes to sunscreen—but they're just as vulnerable to sunburn and UV damage as the rest of your body.
Tips:
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to the tops and sides of your feet, as well as around the ankles.
Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Consider wearing breathable footwear that offers some coverage during peak UV hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
4. Prevent Blisters and Friction Injuries
Wet feet plus heat and movement can create the perfect storm for blisters, especially if your summer footwear isn’t well-fitted.
Tips:
Choose supportive sandals with adjustable straps and avoid overly flat flip-flops for extended walking.
Break in new shoes gradually before a long beach walk or holiday.
Keep feet dry and consider applying blister prevention balms to high-friction areas.
5. Stay Hydrated & Moisturised
Hot weather can lead to dry, cracked heels—especially with frequent sandal or barefoot use.
Tips:
Keep skin soft with a daily foot moisturiser (preferably one containing urea or shea butter).
Avoid moisturising between the toes, as excess moisture there can lead to fungal issues.
Stay hydrated—healthy skin starts from within.
Final Thoughts
Your feet work hard all summer—whether you're relaxing at the pool, exploring sandy shores, or hitting the gym. With just a few preventative steps, you can protect them from common seasonal hazards like infection, sunburn, and injury.
If you notice any persistent issues—such as peeling skin, discolouration, pain, or wounds that won’t heal—don’t hesitate to book an appointment with your podiatrist. Early intervention can prevent minor foot problems from turning into major ones.
Here’s to healthy, happy feet all summer long! ☀️☀️☀️
